AN INTERNATIONAL NETWORK

In line with its international approach, CENTQUATRE is joining a network of arts centres that reflect the same issues. In Berlin, Sasha Walz and Jochen Sandig for dance, Folkert Uhde for music, have just opened RadialSystem in a former electricity substation on the
banks of the Spree.
In Rome, in 2008, Zone Attive will open a 10,000 m2 (107,692 sq. feet) complex dedicated to innovation in the arts in the
city’s former abattoir. In Madrid, the Matadero is also housed in a former abattoir, a jewel of industrial architecture that covers an area of 148,000 m2 (1593,000 sq. feet).
All these venues are being created on a similar basis to CENTQUATRE: they bring together all the arts and are concerned with the concept of transmission. All these new arts centres are keen to take a new look at the place of the artist in society, the conditions in which art is produced and how it is accessed. They are sharing their experiences and pooling their strengths. Other spaces in Europe are getting ready to join this network. As soon as it opens, and every year, CENTQUATRE will offer art students in all disciplines the opportunity to use the work spaces and meet and work with the residents.
By joining this international network, CENTQUATRE will be able to combine different educational methods and cultural approaches. Its first partner: CalArts of Los-Angeles, a top American multidisciplinary art school, has trained some of the greatest artists in contemporary music, fine arts and photography. Other students will join this network and graduate students from all over the world will be encouraged to come to CENTQUATRE as part of their project.
