"Pompes / Circonstances" aims to form a sort of cosmology of short evolving forms, written for various instruments, performers, reciters, singers, mime artists, extras, animals, lights, objects, and all types of accessory.
These pieces which will be performed in groups of 2 to 4, following a lunar periodicity (every new moon), will undertake to explore all the places, spaces, the acoustics, and the formats of the new venue.
The core of the performers will be made up of students from the Paris Higher National Conservatory of Music (in partnership) and by the Ensemble Cairn (flute, clarinet, saxophone, guitar, percussion, piano, violin, viola, cello) to which other instrumentalists from other musical horizons will be added or substituted.
A "musical action" is a generic notion which can include anything from a fixed score to a simple instruction, or rule of play which allows a greater role to chance or to the extra-musical events which then become part of the overall dramaturgy of the entire cycle. The progressive engendering of the different actions, including certain Oulipian rules, will be accomplished through mutations, arborescences, digressions, phase shifts, forming a sort of fragmented narration. The project is something of an attempt at re-enchanting the musical side of any artistic action. Each action lasts from 10 seconds to 10 minutes and is carried out by one to four persons. A single action should bring together 104 persons. Certain actions can be performed simultaneously.
The events begin with the new moon, on October 28 2008 and will end in 2010.
