NEW CINEMA
For the last ten years now, I have been directing fiction and documentary films. Recently, I have become a regular contributor in film schools helping students work towards their careers as writer-directors. There I have met some of the likely talents to watch in the coming years. But times are hard and it is getting harder and harder for these young talents to get themselves known. When they leave school they find themselves unsupported and discouraged. With this in mind, I went to the CENTQUATRE team and offered to go to several film schools in France and in some European countries, in order to seek out strong new films and writers with something to say.
I wanted to make a subjective selection, different from the usual compilations which one often finds in festivals. I wanted to look towards radical, new aesthetics (if they exist) in order to bring out the aspect of research and freedom. By "radical aesthetic", I am talking about an original visual approach and personal subjects, filmed in any format, from DV to mobile phones as well as regular film. It is not a question of promoting any kind of technical excellence, or pure stylistic exercises as sometimes practised in the schools, but of works by authors who reinvent their own view of the world which surrounds them.
I want to approach it without preconceptions, and keep an open mind, free to discover new things, which is why it is difficult for me to define an editorial line for the moment. The selection will evolve over time. I prefer to follow my instinct at first. By agreement with the CENTQUATRE team, we have also decided to exclude all films produced by visual artists in the so-called experimental cinema vein, and stay with a more traditional definition of cinema, one which offers a take on reality, fictional or documentary, rather than dealing with purely visual or artistic concerns.
After several months of research and viewing, a selection of around thirty films will be presented in February 2009, at the occasion of a festival called "New Cinema". These screenings aim to put the directors in touch with the world of production and the industry in general, in order to facilitate their progress in their future projects for feature length films, and to confront them to their first audience.
