Drop House

Biography

The project, winner of the Algeco "elementary architecture" competition, aims to reconcile the limitations of surface with a spatial quality, by creating a comfortable living area with a strong individual character. The different functions of the program are brought together in small units which enlarge the main volume by closing away like drawers: thus the kitchen, the bathroom, the entry hall, and the two bedrooms are positioned as satellites around a single central area. These extensions are implemented during assembly, but the house can just as easily be closed in case of prolonged absence to protect it from intrusion. The whole can be folded to within regulatory width and transported by lorry. The building's orientation can be selected in order to optimise energy use.

A mobile workshop, a lightweight architectural element was designed for the project by young architects from the Drop house group, which they christened the "17". The artists will be able to work in it and receive the public, as a small-scale experimental preview of the way the CENTQUATRE will function. Once the CENTQUATRE has opened, it could take its place in the central avenue, to serve as studio 17.
