Vincent Epplay

(VISUAL ARTIST AND MUSICIAN / FRANCE) PROD. AREA 1

NO DESCRIPTIVE METHOD
FROM FEBRUARY 1 TO APRIL 30 2010

After a first invitation in 2007 for the prelaunch trial of the CENTQUATRE when he produced the installation "Station des ondes" and the a 25 cm vinyl record, "Le disque contre l’insomnie (Hypnose)", issued by PPT Stembogen/Le CENTQUATRE Paris, Vincent Epplay set up his own studio to carry out a series of sound and visual projects.
It is under the generic title "No Descriptive Method" that he is developing a project based on the idea of experiments, transcriptions and restorations, working from documents and audio and visual recordings he has been collecting over several years. This research refers back to several aspects of his work and can take the form of musical compositions, sound arrangements, the projection and production of films, paper publications or vinyl records. This work involving investigation through scholarly games is a means of questioning various principles of composition, mixing and arrangements mainly associated with the field of music. This methodical approach involving the restructuring and manipulation of collected images and sounds has given rise to film recording, production and editing sessions relating to musical composition, projections and concerts.

BIOGRAPHY
A visual artist and a musician, a deviser and maker of installations and sound environments, live recordings and performances, Vincent Epplay is engaged in wide-ranging research involving the materiality of sound and the ways it can be disseminated/received. He devises objects, situations and contexts in which unobtrusive flaws, slips or incongruities occur and disturb our listening habits, question and renew customs … He has been involved in many collaborative ventures in film, dance, contemporary art, and - of course - the musical field.
He has an impressive list of records to his credit for recent years, including the LP "White Tahina Bitch Orchestra" (LDRR), and "Trios", the interpretation of a piece by Tristram Cary with Samon Takahashi (Artkillart), in 2007; in 2008, the compilations "I Regret not Having Kissed You" (Dokidoki) and "Jingles & Génériques" (PPT/Stembogen); in 2009, a collaboration with Sébastien Roux, "Concatenative Mu" (Brocoli) and the LP "Musique pour les plantes des dieux" with Fred Bigot and Arnaud Maget.
