BIOGRAPHY

Gérard Pesson is a composer born in 1958 in Torteron (Cher). After studying literature and musicology at the Sorbonne where he defended a thesis on "Aesthetics of aleatory music" he went on to join classes of Betsy Jolas and Ivo Malec at the Paris Higher National Conservatory of Music and Dance (CNSMDP) where he obtained two first prizes in the classes of analysis and composition.

In 1986, he founded the review of contemporary music Entretemps. In the same year he became a producer at France Musique radio. He won first prize of the Studium of Toulouse in 1986 for "Les Chants Faëz", and was winner of the alternative opera competition with "Beau Soir" first performed in concert version at the 1989 Avignon Festival, and then given in a stage version at Musica in 1990. In 1996 Gerard Pesson won the Prince Pierre of Monaco Prize. He was an intern at the Villa Medicis from October 1990 to April 1992.

Since 1988 Gerard Pesson has been concentrating increasingly on music for the stage. His works have been played by a number of ensembles and orchestras in France and abroad: Ensemble Fa, 2E2M, Intercontemporain, Itinéraire, Ensemble Moderna, Ensemble Recherche, Ensemble Ictus, Alter Ego, Accroche Note, Erwartung, Orchestre national de Lyon, Orchestre national d’Île-de-France, etc. His opera "Forever Valley", commissioned by T&M, with a libretto by Marie Redonnet, was given its first performance in April 2000 at the Theâtre des Amandiers in Nanterre. His opera "Pastorale", based on "Astrée" by Honoré d'Urfé, was given its first performance in Stuttgart in May 2006. He is professor of composition at the CNSMDP.
