This page means to answer to questions you might ask yourself if you are an artist wishing to assign us a project.
The current “artists-in-residencies” are welcomed for the foreshadowing period of CENTQUATRE. They work outside the area as CENTQUATRE's site is not yet at our disposal. The contracts signed for the foreshadowing are different from the specific conventions that will be established between CENTQUATRE and the coming artists-in-residencies selected through this call for projects.
There is no set number of residencies. It notably depends on the length of each residency. CENTQUATRE is able to welcome 12 projects or so simultaneously.
Depending on the length of the residencies, the artists who do not live in Paris are accommodated in Paris, either in flats, at the CENTQUATRE, or in apartments provided by our partners.
CENTQUATRE hosts one entity that leads each project, be it an artist or a team of artists such as a company. The leaders are actually called “in-residencies”. They receive a grant each month and benefit from all the advantages set up in the conventions that define the terms of the residencies. Thus, if a team is hosted by CENTQUATRE for a residency, the team members will share the monthly grant. In parallel other artists or technicians can team up with the artists-in-residencies but will not have the status of “in-residencies at CENTQUATRE”.
Besides, other types of contracts such as coproduction contracts can be signed after the period of residency. Important to be mentioned is that all these terms can evolve and special agreements be reached in order to tackle particular problems.
Only one has to be named.
No, this application form will make it possible to select a part of all the artists. The other artists-in-residencies will be selected by both directors in a direct manner.
Studios are also lent or rented over shorter periods (between three and six weeks), without financial support, so that artistic teams can work full time on a specific step of their project. During those short residencies, they participate in the life of the place, by offering "rendez-vous" to the audience. However, they can not organize no vocational training.
No, the directors will only meet the artists who will be pre-selected (see question below). As a consequence, the applications must be exhaustive, with notably recommendation letters. However, if necessary, applicants can be asked for further information on their projects.
A panel named by the directors and composed of artists of every discipline and professionals of the artistic sector will proceed to the first step (that is to say a pre-selection) of the selection process. The size of the panel will depend on the number of applications. Then, the directors will meet the pre-selected applicants and proceed to the definitive selection.
First of all is the artistic criterion. The project has to stick to CENTQUATRE's philosophy, which has to be interpreted by the artist. The candidate’s project also has to “dialogue” with the other selected projects. Thus, an intrinsically very interesting application can be rejected because of its lack of compatibility with the other projects.
Beyond the artistic criteria, the candidate has to send application in time with all the required documents and information.
Several artistic projects of CENTQUATRE's pre-opening phase were closely linked to the place, its history or its architecture. At that particular time, we wanted to put the stretch on the transformation of the Municipal Funeral Service into a place of art.
During this new call for application, artists are free to work on the subject they want to. There is no obligation to However, projects must fit with CENTQUATRE's project, which is to increase the number of channels for accessing contemporary creative art and allow unrestricted access to it by showing the different steps of the creation's process .
No.
All arts will be represented. Theatre will be less represented but arts of the scene will find a place at CENTQUATRE.
One application has to correspond to one project, but it is possible to send several applications.
No. During the whole residency period, the artist has to devote himself to the creation of his work or to the leading of his project. He is not expected to show finished works until the end of his residency.
Yes, on condition that a professional is named to lead the project and that a precise project for the residency is described in the application. In any case, the CENTQUATRE’s workshops are not at the disposal of associations that just want to capitalise on the room inside CENTQUATRE to do their usual job.
Candidates have to provide financial elements so that CENTQUATRE can have an idea of the costs but a full estimate is not required.
No. This call for residency must enable us to improve the next one. According to the results, notably the number, artistic and geographic diversity of the applications, adjustments will be made in terms of diffusion, means of response, composition of the panel. CENTQUATRE is currently a construction site and, even after its inauguration, it will keep evolving.
